I've always been interested in model-making and building things, but it wasn't until a few years ago that I got into 3D printing. I was lucky enough to have 3D printing resources at Iowa State, where I could test different ideas and materials. I was recently gifted a 3D printer and have been able to experiment even more. 3D printing gives me a creative outlet that involves problem-solving, tinkering, and design.
Costume Design
One thing I love about 3D printing is how practical it can be. My brother-in-law and I both have 3D printers, and we were asked by a friend to create a costume consisting of a mask and staff for a convention. We were able to print the mask and staff in multiple pieces and adhere them together for the perfect lightweight accessories to the costume. I then painted the material the correct colors to complete the look. This project was extremely exciting and rewarding to create, and it opened my eyes to even more possibilities of 3D printing.

Business Development and Creation
When the pandemic hit, I (like most others) was extremely bored and looking for something to keep me occupied. My mom had asked me to use my grandma's old sewing machine to make some cloth masks for the family. I completed the task and wondered what else I could create. I found a few sewing patterns online and combined some of them to create plush toys. I posted a picture of one of the toys on Facebook, and my friends and family all enjoyed it. I decided to start selling these toys that I called Whale-Dinos, "not quite a whale and not quite a dino." I created social media posts about my new creation, and family and friends reached out with their orders. I ended up selling about 30 handmade toys and learned a lot about developing a business in the process. I enjoyed having the opportunity to be creative, and it helped me realize how much I like learning about businesses and business development.
Nails and Nail Art
During school breaks, I've discovered a neat way to stay creative: doing nails. It's been surprisingly enjoyable, and I've found satisfaction in the small-scale artistry it offers.  Doing nails lets me play around with all sorts of designs, from tiny flowers to fancy patterns. I like getting into the small details, and it's become a cool way for me and my clients to get into the spirit of holidays and events. I get to jazz up everyone's nails with festive themes, which can be super fun. It's definitely helped me get more creative and appreciate the beauty of small-scale art.
