Fall 2022 // Portland, Oregon
Arch 401 Prof. Nathan Griffith, Prof. Khalid Khan, Prof. Nick Lindsley, and Prof. Brian Warthen
Project created with Donovan Sandoval
The project brief was to choose a Portland-based non-profit to "partner with" and create a building to accommodate the organization's needs.
The Cupcake Girls is a non-profit organization that provides confidential support, advocacy, and trauma-informed outreach to people involved in the sex industry as well as those affected by sex trafficking.
The cupcake girls promote "Rights, not Rescue." Our take is "Rights and Rescue," empowering those seeking resources and helping those looking to change their circumstances. The building acts as a Venn diagram, with "rescue" and "rights" spaces overlapping into a shared "and" space.
The "rights" space - represented with orange in the image to the right - consists of safe public gathering spaces and classrooms for vocational training. Classes like cooking, technology, and personal economics allow people to broaden their skill sets for personal or professional growth. The "rescue" portion, in pink, is a hostel-like transitional housing space that provides women and their dependents a safe space to get back on their feet. The overlapping "and" space is a medical clinic that provides support for both the public and private users of the building.
The goal of this building is to help those who are both consensually and non-consensually in the sex industry by providing them with the right resources. To learn more about the Cupcake Girls and their organization, visit their website https://www.thecupcakegirls.org/.
